Assalamualaikum Parents,
Our class is starting a mathematics unit on
measurement!
Children will explore time to the nearest 5 minutes on an analog clock, and to the nearest minute on a digital clock. They will work with money amounts to $10, measure temperature in degrees Celsius, capacity in litres and millilitres, and mass in grams and kilograms.
Children will explore time to the nearest 5 minutes on an analog clock, and to the nearest minute on a digital clock. They will work with money amounts to $10, measure temperature in degrees Celsius, capacity in litres and millilitres, and mass in grams and kilograms.
In this unit, your child will:
• Use
calendars to show the passage of days, weeks, and months.
• Use
analog and digital clocks to measure time.
• Tell and
write time.
• Use a thermometer
to measure temperature.
• Count
money, make change, and read and write money amounts.
• Measure
the capacity of a container in millilitres and litres.
• Measure
the mass of an object in grams and kilograms.
The
concepts and skills in this unit are directly applicable to everyday life. Here
are some activities you can try with your child:
• Have your
child count the weeks until her or his next birthday.
• Have your
child mark important dates, or dates for recurring events, on a
calendar.
• Encourage
your child to read the weather report in the newspaper, or listen to it on the
radio or television. Discuss the forecasted temperatures.
• Ask your
child to tell the time at home.
• When
shopping, have your child identify items sold by capacity (mL or L),
and items
sold by mass (g or kg).
• Have your
child help measure the ingredients during the preparation of meals.
